What's happening with Working Wisconsin?

I for one am seeing some greater activity with companies in spending some money on marketing, where in the past 6 months they didn't even want to talk about spending. I know that those companies that continue to market in a down economy generally gain market share as you look 2 years beyond a recession. Some that don't just don't survive period.

Biz Beat: Labor Day 2010 offers little to cheer

There's no shortage of economic reports pegged to Labor Day, and
for working people the news is pretty bleak.

Here in Madison, the Center for Wisconsin Strategy is out with
its "State of Working Wisconsin 2010" report, which paints
a rather grim employment picture both in the long and short
term.

The report from the liberal UW-Madison think tank finds
Wisconsin has 155,200 fewer jobs than it did at the start of the
recession, meaning about 5 percent of total jobs in the state have
been shed. The manufacturing sector alone has seen a 25 percent
loss in jobs over the past decade.

While the state unemployment rate has eased somewhat, falling to
7.8 percent in July, the "underemployment" rate -- which includes
those who've given up looking for work or are working part-time
because they can't find a full-time job -- now accounts for fully
15 percent of the Wisconsin labor force.

Disney Institute program a success in Madison

The comments and emails are coming in now as the attendees in the recent Disney's Approach to Quality Service program held on August 30th in Madison have a chance to take a breath and evaluate the great learning experience they had with the Disney Institute trainers.

The group was diverse in terms of industry. Healthcare services, accounting, professional engineering services, non profits, Fortune 500 e-commerce, mining equipment company, sales consulting, social media consultant, pharmacy, motorcycle manufacturer, hospitality/resort military, medical provider and others gave the group a variety of opinions on service.

About 30% of the group had been to a Disney facility in the past. About 30% had some previous customer service or quality training in the past. While some were anxious to see a few more examples of how other business fully integrated the Disney Institute principles into their businesses, most were quite content to absorb each and every Disney example, picture, movie clip and point on how they make every touch point of the Disney experience a magical one for every guest.

Disney Style

by Scott Madison Paton

Can Mickey Mouse teach corporate
America new quality lessons?
Quality Digest
takes a
look behind
the scenes at Walt Disney World.

It's hard to imagine a place more magical than
Walt Disney World. The central Florida theme park continues to
thrill, delight and exceed its guests' expectations more than 25
years after its opening.

Walt Disney World's recent 25th anniversary celebration provided
Quality Digest with a sneak peek behind the scenes. A peek that
provided the answer to the secret of Disney's success--one that
Disney is now willing to share with outsiders through its new Disney
Institute.

Social Media for Business - Latest video on the B2B space

I like the fact the Deming Hill has taken this concept and adjusted it from the perspective of the B2B space. Truly these organizations have been working to understand how and why they should engage. Those that have started with first steps I hope will be willing to share case studies - success and failure so we can all learn and support.

Wrap up to my social media campaign for Disney Institute

Its been a wild three month working on the event promotion for the recent Disney Institute program - Disney's Approach to Quality Service. This article from CustomerThink and the included video are a nice finish. Don't believe the restrictions that others put on you. We don't get a mulagan on life, so don't hold back.

I learned alot about both traditional and social media event promotion. Not all of it worked well, but if we don't try new things we will likely get the same old results. Heres the video link

Walt understood the power of the unexpected extra

walt disney

Perhaps one of the best examples of Walt’s obsession for “plussing” comes from Disney historian Les Perkins’ account of an incident that took place at Disneyland during the early years of the park. Walt had decided to hold a Christmas parade at the new park at a cost of $350,000. Walt’s accountants approached him and besieged him to not spend money on an extravagant Christmas parade because the people would already be there. Nobody would complain, they reasoned, if they dispensed with the parade because nobody would be expecting it.

Walt’s reply to his accountants is classic: “That’s just the point,” he said. “We should do the parade precisely because no one’s expecting it. Our goal at Disneyland is to always give the people more than they expect. As long as we keep surprising them, they’ll keep coming back. But if they ever stop coming, it’ll cost us ten times that much to get them to come back.”

Today’s Lagniappe (a little something extra) – Pat Williams talks about EPCOT in the video below.  99.9% of folks have no clue what EPCOT stands for.  Since I’m an acronym hound I’ll let you in on some trivia.  If you’ve visited the park this will make perfect sense . . . Every Person Comes Out Tired*.  Enjoy the video.
